Earth Day falls on April 22. Every year, millions of people from over 200 countries
celebrate Earth Day to share how to protect the planet and save natural resources. The idea
for the first Earth Day came from the American Senator, G. Nelson. In 1970, pollution in the
US was a serious problem. Nelson asked the country to protest and over 20 million people
did it. It was the first Earth Day in history. Twenty years later, people from other countries
got together again to call for more action. That year, 200 million people from 141 countries
celebrated Earth Day together around the world. In 2000, around 500 million people from
184 countries took part in it. We need more action.
What can we do in our everyday life?
Take short showers to save water.
• Turn off lights when leaving a room.
• Don't leave the refrigerator door open for too long.
• Don't leave water running while brushing your teeth.
• Turn off the TV when you're not watching it.
• Sell or donate clothes and things you don't use.
• Walk, ride a bicycle, or take the bus/MRT.
Always put trash in the right place.
• Use recycled paper and don't waste paper and paper products.
• Use shopping bags, not plastic bags.
Keep these things in mind, make them a habit, and take action as soon as possible.
With time, our home will become better than ever.
