We all know how fairy tales go. A beautiful girl waits for a prince to come and save
her and then she marries him and lives happily ever after. But what if the girl was
smart, creative, brave or strong? What if she wanted to be a spy, a politician, a sailor
or an astronaut rather than a princess? That’s the idea behind the book Good Night
Stories for Rebel Girls, a book of fairy tales with a differene; all the stories are true.
The book tells the stories of one hundred inspring women from 1500 BC in the
time of Ancient Egypt to the modern world. And each one comes with drawings or
paintings from sixty women artists. The magic of the book lies in the way it is written.
It is not just boring biographies but is told in the style of fairy tales. Some of the
stories begin “Once upon a time” just like a traditional fairy tale. Take sailor Jessica
Watson’s stories for example, it begins “Once upon a time, there was a girl called
Jessica who was afraid of water.” We learn how Jessica sailed alone around the world
at age 16. ‘All on her own, Jessica sailed on. She fought against waves as tall as
buildings in New York, she woke up to the most beautiful sunrises, spotted blue
whales, and watched shooting stars above her boat.’
You probably haven’t heard of most of the women but you’ll be wondering why. In
some cases, it’s because people tried to erase them from history. Like Hatshepsut, one
of the most successful pharaohs of Egypt who made the country rich and safe and
ruled for about 25 years. But after her death, some of her statues and official records
were removed by men who came after her. In other cases, it’s because a man’s name
became more famous. For example, Charles Babbage is called the ‘father of
computers’ but it was a woman – and friend of his – Ada Lovelace who wrote the first
computer program.
If you read the book, you can start to learn women who fought for their rights,
women who broke rules, women who didn’t want to fit into the roles society gave
them. It’s a great idea to show young girls how powerful they can be, but the stories
are just as interesting for boys to read.
