You walk into a restaurant and you look at the menu. To
your surprise, you find “pork and egg ice cream” in the dessert
section. Are you curious to try it? Or does the thought of it
make you want to vomit? This kind of food is an example of
“molecular gastrnomy.” Molecular gastronomy uses science to
create foods that will make you say “Wow!” Edible chemicals
are added to foods to create special forms, flavors, and textures.
The name “molecular gastronomy” was invented in 1988
by two scientists from the University of Oxford. Nicholas and
Hervé wanted to find out how a food’s taste is decided by
chemical reactions. They then used science instead of
traditional cooking methods to create something different. Now,
imagine a tiny apple that tastes just like meat, or spaghetti with
a vegetable flavor. The special thing about these is they make
your brain expect one flavor but something completely different
is delivered. You really must try these foods because they’ll
blow your mind! (From Unit 12 in English 4U)
Russia has continued the attack on Ukraine. Russian forces
are trying to take the capital, Kyiv, but Ukraine’s soldiers are
fighting hard.
Russia’s forces are trying to choke off the country’s capital,
Kyiv. Mr. Putin wants to replace Ukraine’s current leaders with a
government that is friendly to Russia. Though Ukraine President
Volodymyr Zelensky has asked outside countries for help, he has
warned the Ukrainians, “We are defending our country alone.”
Ukraine is fighting back harder than Russia seemed to
expect. In some areas, it is holding off Russian soldiers.
A move in the United Nations (UN) to condemn Russia’s
attack failed. 86 countries from around the world joined in
condemning the invasion, and asked Russia to end its attack.
However, China and India are two large countries which have
NOT condemned Russia’s actions.
