In the fashion world, one day you’re in but the next
day you’re out. The “Big Four”, New York City, London,
Milan, and Paris are ready to show their latest trends.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) kicks off on
September 5th and runs for about eight days. It is
considered the most commercial and casual of the f our. It
is also the only event to allow some fashion school
students to participate. In other words, they can show
their design on the runway.
After NYFW ends, London Fashion Week (LFW)
comes on the heels of it. Once considered a minor player
among the Big Four, LFW can now command a roster of
big names and promising new designer. LFW is famous
for being very experimental and open to new ideas.
Milan Fashion Week begins on September 17th. This
beautiful Italian city is home to some of the biggest
fashion houses, including Armani and Prada. If one word
can describe Milan’s fashion style, it’s “glamour.”
The last but not least, Paris Fashion Week never fails
to offer some of the most exciting show of the season.
Saving the best for the last, world-famous labels like
Chanel and Dior try to outdo one another with their
newest design. “Elegant” and “Extravagant” are the best
two words to decribe the show.
Though each fashion week has its own unique way,
they all have one thing in common: They will have a
chance to define and introduce the lastest trends.

Each weekday, about 30 million students in the
United States eat a school lunch. Then they fill cafeteria
trash cans with uneaten food.
Wasted food is a waste of money, a missed chance to
feed hungry people, and bad for the environment. That’s
why schools are trying to reduce the number of food in
the trash. “We don’t want good food to go to waste,” said
Nancy Deming, who works for the Oakland Unified
School District, in California.
Schools have several ways to cut down on food
waste. Students are often hungrier after active play, so
having lunch after a break can reduce waste. Making the
lunch period longer also helps. It gives kids more time to
eat. In Oakland, schools set up share tables. Students put
untouched food on the share tables, and other students
can take the food if they want it.
Sometimes, students waste food because they don’t
like how it tastes. Chef Sam Icklan wants to change that.
In one school, kale often went untouched. Icklan used the
kale as a pizza topping and called the dish Green Monster
Pizza. Kids loved it. “It became a beautiful, vibrant dish,”
he says. “Who wouldn’t eat that?”
