Unlike many other bugs, bees are very helpful for us. They help plants make seeds and
give us honey, yet bees are dying off. Whole hives of bees are disappearing fast. Worker
bees leave the queen, and baby bees are at home without food and water. And, it’s
happening in many parts of the world.
It is believed that it has something to do with pesticides. Farmers use them to kill
the bugs that eat the plants on their farms. Doing this helps their fruits and vegetables look
better and get them better prices. However, pesticides hurt bees. They make worker bees
forget the way home. Then all the bees in the family die because workers can’t bring food
home.
What will happen if there are no bees? Flowering plants will die off. We may no
longer have the chance to see or smell a flower. What’s worse, a lot of food chain won’t
have enough food because there are few animals and plants. The world will be in danger
without bees. We should do our best to make the Earth a friendlier place for them.

Have you ever heard of “the sound of honesty?” There is an “honest” store in Taichung.
In the store, there is no clerk. Ms. Jiang, the owner of the store, waters the plants and cleans
the place, and then she leaves the store. Visitors get the things they want to buy and put the
money by themselves in a big urn—also called “the honest urn.” When the coin falls down
into the urn, it makes a clear sound. That’s “the sound of honesty.”
It was an old store and was going to be shut down. Ms. Jiang wanted to keep the place
because people there had a lot of memories of the store. Elder people rested there; children
played and did their homework there. It was a place for all. Ms. Jiang bought the store and
kept it open for everyone. She couldn’t stay at the store all day, so she came up with the
honest idea. Now there are a lot of visitors even foreigners come to shop “honesty.”
Ms. Jiang said that she never worries about that people don’t pay. The price of not paying
is expensive. They will feel guilty whenever they think of it. “Once a visitor sent $20 from
Taipei because he forgot to pay at the store.” Sometimes she loses money because people
don’t pay, but she still believes in people. Ms. Jiang is very touched that there are always
people who understand what she’s doing.
