agreement. “What's going on next?” I murmured to myself. “Pearl, excuse me! You have to sign
your name here and we are going to start off proofreading.” We did in this way: one looked at the
test paper carefully, the other read everything out loud, including questions, page number,
punctuations--period, dash, comma, colon and so forth. It's really something that I never experienced
and will not miss. Happy as a bird, I freed from the torture of repeatedly proofreading, which made
my nerves hot as fire for two days on June 23 and June 24 .
We never knew how much people pay for their work until you get involved in their field.
Days walks slowly like turtles. We did not know what the weather is outside and how it looks
like because we are living in another planet without day and night. Cellar is our temporary home. We
are moles in the underground. And my watch is the very right thing can tell me the time. I wondered,
after 12 days, what it would be like when I see the sunshine throw through the window.
English paper was put in press quickly after we finished the revision and dozens of times
proofreading. Thus, the following days, I got the chance to observe how my other colleagues did
their jobs and how they communicated patiently and passionately with professors. Also, I had
another chance to review the document of the process about the preparing of the whole stuff. I could
not help giving my admiration to all of the team members who managed the English test. Due to
their cautious preparing and arrangement, we were able to have the rest part done in a short time
after we were put here. Especially, I appreciated their gentle and sensible interaction. I can smell out
their politeness in viewing different opinions.
In the evening, we had a break for chitchat with the leader of the team. We so appreciated his
hardworking and cautious attitude in dealing with those stuff—wording, editing, clearness, packing
—that might seem trivial but actually very significant and greatly influential. Definitely he is a very
responsible person that I can feel from his talk. He once mentioned he had ever dreamed somehow
he walked out of the underground and couldn't find the door back. He was so frightened that he was
unable to come back. I do wish he could bloom a broad smile often on his face instead of tight lips. It
showed on his shoulders are tons of stones.
When winter comes, spring is not far away.
In northern of America, moles are the first animals bringing the message of the coming of the
spring. The dark days now are running out step by step. Our leader showed up in our office this
morning with a blooming smile like Lily, peaceful. He looks handsome today. Tons of stones fell out
off his shoulder. Yesterday we had all the work done. It is June 29 today .
Save Us
The role now I am taking with other colleagues from other senior high schools is a little
awkward. In academics, we are not that kind broad and learned as professors. What the advantages
we take are we are on-line practicing teachers; we can tell what students have learned and what their
levels are. However, we still have some puzzle: we are not quite sure we are doing the thing right or
doing the right thing. We are small persons and we are so afraid of messing up the mission,
especially when we were informed that we are supposed to say something in the meeting at noon on
July 3.
Life meets its curve in somewhere. If that is a must then it is a must. Will I take the mission one
more? Who knows it? The solid belief I hold throughout my life:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
