Dear Amy,
I’m a student faced with a serious problem that almost messes up my life: I can’t finish
my homework on time. Take yesterday’s English assignment for example. What I needed to
do was just write an introductory paragraph for an essay. I gave it some thought, but soon I
found my eyes and my mind wandering to the mosquito bites on my leg. Next, I noticed a
stain on my pants, starting to recall how I got it. “Yes! It must be Tom’s fault! He kicked me
because he was jealous of my new pants! By the way, I have to leave a message to him! The
date for the club meeting is set.” After all was done and when my eyes rested on the clock, I
was shocked to find that it was already time for bed; however, I hadn’t even started on my
paragraph! The frustrating situation occurs to me every day. I feel overwhelmed now
because I have got further and further behind with my studies. Catching up on my work is
just like trying to walk up an escalator moving downward—nearly impossible. Therefore, I
find myself always trapped by unfinished business from the past, and never feeling free to
live in the present. What should I do now?
Worried Mike

I’m eight months pregnant now. In the morning, I’m often woken up by the kicks of
my unborn twins. My husband used to work in a factory; however, he has been unemployed
since half a year ago. The global economic crisis has made quite a number of people jobless.
I’m a server in a shabby café near the countryside. The recession has no impact on the
business, since many people still grab a bite here. It might be the reason why I’m not laid
off.
This morning, after my husband dropped me at my workplace, tears suddenly blurred
my vision. If he fails this time, we will have to sell our battered car. That’s because the twins
are due next month. Just when I felt I could no longer stand the situation, an elderly lady
came and gave me hope. She turned up with her hair and coat completely wet. Having been
on my feet the entire day, I still forced a smile at this freezing lady and passed her a hot
towel. Surprisingly, when I went to get her change for the hundreddollar bill, she had slid
out the door. On her table she left a note to me: “Hopefully, you can make good use of the
money for your baby. If possible, pass this love to whoever is in need.” With such amount of
money, I’m now relieved, and I can’t wait to tell the good news to my husband, who has
been worried sick about our future.
46. This passage is mainly about _______.
(A) the global economic crisis
(B) love passed forward
(C) women at the workplace
