E-waste refers to all types of electronic or electric equipment that is no longer in use and treated as trash. Anything you
can imagine that uses an electric wire can be on this list, such as TVs, washing machines, cell phones, stereo systems, and
computers, just to name a few. E-waste contains harmful but also valuable rare materials, and up to 60 elements from the
periodic table(週期表)can be found in some electronic products. Take the computer for example. Some models of PC
monitors contain cadmium(鎘), which is bioaccumulative and toxic for humans, especially harmful to their kidneys and bones.
Lighting devices within the flat screen monitors use mercury(汞), which can damage the nervous system, kidneys, and brain.
And the material used most widely inside or outside the computer is some form of plastic such as PVC. When burned or buried,
these toxic plastics will release chemicals into the environment that can affect human reproductive and immune systems(生殖
和免疫系統). According to a UN survey, at least 50 million tons of e-waste are produced every year, and most e-waste is
exported to developing countries such as China, India, or Nigeria, where workers recycle what they can without high-tech
techniques. This is extremely harmful to the poorly protected workers and their local environment. Now the major developed
countries are trying to reduce e-waste by signing treaties to ban the exporting of toxic trash, or by passing laws against dumping
e-waste.

The Formosan salmon, a subspecies of the seema(櫻鱒), is unique to Taiwan. This fish is a critically endangered species
and is protected in its natural habitat by the Taiwan government. In fact, this is one of the rarest fish in the world, with only
about 400 left. The Formosan salmon used to be a staple of the Taiwanese aborigines’ diet. Over the years, overfishing has
resulted in a rapid decrease in the total number of this fish, but nowadays pollution is actually the main threat.
Actually, the Formosan salmon is a subspecies that dates back to the last Ice Age(冰河時代), at which time these fish
became locked inland in extremely cold mountain streams. Therefore, it’s amazing that Taiwan, a subtropical island, should
have salmon, which normally prefer a more temperate climate. About a foot in length, the Formosan salmon lives in cold
streams at elevations above 1,500 meters; it can survive in temperatures as low as 16 degrees Celsius. With so few members of
this subspecies still around, Taiwan’s conservationists are trying hard to protect them. Hopefully, this Formosan national
treasure can one day be made to thrive again as it once did.
