Being Polite: How to Soften Your English
This is Sian from BBC English. In this class, we're going to look at something people love doing: being polite.
"No, I'm not coming to your party this evening.""Wow, this food is terrible!""Give me some of your lunch."
Sometimes, it's okay to talk with your friends like that, but it's important not to sound “not polite”, especially
in the workplace. Here are three ways you can soften your language to make you more polite.
Asking People to Do Something
Now look at these two askings—which one sounds more polite and less direct(直接)?
1. "Pick me up on your way to the party this evening."
2. "I was hoping that you could give me a ride to the party."
Number two is much more polite.
We soften our askings and questions by using past forms(式), continuous(持續進行) forms, or both. For
example, "I was thinking if you could give me a ride later." We can also make askings softer by using a
negative(否定的) question with a question tag(附加). Like "You couldn't give me a ride later, could you?"
or "I don't think you could pick me up tonight, could you?"
Giving Ideas
Which do you think sounds less direct and more polite?
1. "You're too young to get married."
2. "I feel you're a little young to be getting married."
Yes, the second one is much less direct. It's softer.
We use words "guess" "feel" to make us sound less direct. You can also use the words like "kind of," "a little ".
It also helps if you make it into a question: "Aren't you kind of young to ride a motorcycle?"
Talk about Problems
Which of the following sentences sounds less direct?
1. "You made a mistake in this report."
2. "You seem to make a mistake here in this report."
Yes. The second one was softer, less direct.
We talk about problems with words like "seem" and "appear" to soften them. So, you may say, "You appear to
lose my report by mistake." You could also use these to talk about your own problems, like "I seem to have
lost those reports you wanted."
