Thousands of people visited my city to run a marathon last
autumn. I was surprised to see so many people running around
the city. The air was really dirty. It was the kind of day that I
would not even think about going outside. But I saw all these
people running. Didn’t they know it was a bad idea? They
would take in PM2.5 particles when they ran. There were some
people running that day with masks on. But what’s the point of
running when the air is dirty?
Because I wanted to know what would happen if people
run without a mask on such a day, I began to look for
information and found out it was worse than I thought. One
study shows how much air a runner takes in during a
marathon—four hours of such an activity equates to a 24-hour
breathing at rest. The dirty particles in the air during a marathon
are enough to turn the mask filter from white to dark brown.
Running is good for health, but you have to think carefully
where and when you run next time. If the air in your city is not
always good, don’t just look with your eyes before you go
exercising. Whether it is during the day or at night, maybe the
safest way is to exercise in your home or in a gym. Remember
two rules: exercise often and stay away from dirty air.
