四、閱讀測驗。(12%,每題 2)
(一)
If you are taking a selfie or group photo, the most
important thing is a smile. Although everyone wants to
look at ease in their pictures today, this wasn’t always true.
Before cameras, people went to painters to have pictures of
what they looked like. But why did those people in
pictures seldom have big smiles?
We used to think that people seldom smiled in old
paintings because they had bad teeth. However, having bad
teeth was so common in the past that no one would have
cared. Funnily enough, most of the time in human history,
people thought smiling was rude, though that’s not the
reason why people in old paintings seldom have big
smiles.
The real reason why there are so few smiles in old
paintings is simple. Smiling for a long time is hard.
Subjects had to sit without moving for hours at a time
when a painter painted them. There are a few famous
exceptions, though, such as the subject of the Mona Lisa.
Because of her smile’s rarity, it’s much more special.

New Materials from Larvae
04/15/2021 by Tracy Lendon
The first insect farm in Singapore uses larvae of
Black Soldier flies to make new materials. A larva is a
young insect without wings and legs which later changes
into an adult.
In the past, companies made pet food and fertilizers
(things that are spread on the land or given to plants to
help plants grow better) from larvae, and now, it is
possible to make new materials. People use these materials
in medicine and in electronics, too. The larvae can change
food waste into a special material, and scientists can make
chitosan from it. Chitosan can have pain become less and
people can use it in medicine.
Another material is melanin, which lets electricity
go through. People can use it in batteries and other things.
One of the farm´s owners said that they used ways
which did not hurt the natural world. One reason is people
usually got melanin from a squid (a sea animal with a long
body and ten arms around the mouth), but it was a very
difficult way which needed a lot of chemicals. Melanin
from larvae is easier and needs less chemicals.

Modern San Diego, California, is a city full of
trees, flowers, parks and plants. But up to the late 1800s,
it was mainly empty land. San Diego didn’t change into a
green city until a woman came to help.
Kate Sessions came to the city in 1884. Soon
after, she knew she had a dream of growing plants and
flowers, and in 1885 she opened a flower shop.
Seven years later, Sessions rented a small space
which later became Balboa Park. Over the following
years, Sessions planted a hundred trees a year in the park,
turning it into one of the most charming city parks in
America. She kept bringing in more plants, flowers and
trees all over San Diego. Without the work of Sessions,
many of those would be never seen in the hot, dry
climate.
Sessions died in 1940. Although she may be gone,
Kate Sessionss green thumb truly left its mark on San
Diego. The city never forgot her and even put up a statue
of her in 1998 to thank her.
