Since the COVID-19 outbreak this year, many people have driven anywhere and lined up for hours just to get a
mask. However, to prevent the COVID-19, washing your hands often is more important than wearing a face mask, said
Miu Wei-chieh, a doctor at Mennonite Christian Hospital in Hualien.
Miu said that both “wet wash” and “dry wash” ways can help prevent people from catching a virus. A wet wash is
washing one's hands under running water with soap for more than a minute, so one's hands are very clean. Using only
warm water is useless. A dry wash is using an alcohol-based hand cleaner to clean one's hands. Only people who visit
a hospital or who are serious sick should wear masks.
Dr. Chen Wei-po said that masks can be reused by the same wearer if the masks do not get wet and are not worn for
more than four to six hours in dangerous places like hospitals. Doctors say that masks can be sterilized by putting both
sides of the mask under the ultraviolet (UV) light for 30 minutes. However, the masks must then be put in a clean dry
place for three days before being reused. Another way to extend the life of masks is to use the washable mask covers.
The mask cover needs to be cleaned every day before use.

India’s Dangerous Garbage Mountain
A large “garbage mountain” is the Ghazipur landfill in New Delhi, India. It’s already 65 meters high. Every year,
the landfill grows by 10m. By 2020, it will be taller than the 73-meter-high Taj Mahal.
People leave about two million kilograms of garbage there every day. Soon, India’s government will need to put
red lights on it. This will make it easier for airplanes to see.
The garbage makes dangerous gas. It often catches fire, and it takes days to put out these fires. The air, land and
water around the landfill are full of pollution. This makes people sick. The government wants to clean up the landfill.
They’ll need to work hard to solve this serious problem. *adapted from 康軒英語 “Global Vision”
