The Ugly Truth Behind Beautiful Clothes
From GRTs Nikki and Natta in Guei-ren, Tainan
You may know fast food, but what about fast fashion? Before, we
walked through our lives but, now, to make money, we need to run and
speed up. We have fast food, convenient stores with instant noodles and
drive through take-outs.
To make people buy lots of clothes is how fast fashion makes money. So,
fast fashion company need to sell clothes of different and new designs. Take
Zara for example. Before, Zara made 3 pieces of new clothes with nice
designs every year, but now, they make 2 pieces of new clothes every week.
The cost of designing gets high. With the increasing cost of designing, but
still to keep the prices of clothes low, the fast fashion companies move the
factories to countries like India for cheap workers. In some countries, a
worker makes only about 2.5 NT dollars for an hour's work. Also, most
companies use polyester to make clothes because it is cheap. However, the
polyester comes off the clothes little by little when you wash them. In the
end, it goes into the sea and hurts the environment.
What can we do? Shop secondhand and also look for quality. It
means buy less but better. By doing so, we can help the environment and
also those poor workers.
