五、閱讀測驗  (15 題,每題 2 分,共 30 分)

(一)

It’s the season for juicy watermelon, fresh strawberries, and baskets of blueberries. Next time you enjoy a bite of delicious

fruit, thank honeybees. Without them, you won’t be able to enjoy these sweet treats. And that’s what scientists have been

worrying about. Since 2006, billions of honeybees all over the world have been dead. Scientists aren’t sure what makes

honeybees disappear.

Why are bees so important?

One-third of the fruits and vegetables we eat need honeybees to carry pollen from one plant to another as a pollinator.

background image

Therefore, if there aren’t enough bees to do so, there will be fewer and fewer foods. Then, a food shortage or a large rise in the

price of food may happen. Although other pollinators, like butterflies, bats, and wind all help pass on pollen, none do as good of a

job as the hard-working bees.

What can be done?

While scientists are working on solving the problem, you can do your part to help bees. Have an adult help you with the

ideas below.

1. Create a bee-friendly “house” in your yard, or even in a flower pot.

2. Find out when plants bloom. Plan your garden, so you will have flowers bloom from spring to autumn.

3. Keep your garden chemical-free. Choose the plants which are easier to grow without any pesticides.

The tiny country of Luxembourg(盧森堡) has cut fares on buses, trams, and trains. The government hopes that free

transportation will encourage more people to stop driving. Luxembourg has more cars on its roads than anywhere else in Europe(歐

洲). Drivers there spend over 30 hours a week in traffic jams.

The country needs to make road transportation become better because the population is quickly rising. What’s more, workers

from other countries bring extra traffic problems into the country. Many people from France(法國), Germany(德國), and Belgium(比

利時) commute to Luxembourg for work. They should pay fares on public transportation. Therefore, neither visitors nor residents

need to pay fares on public transportation now.

Public transportation in Luxembourg was already cheap. The government has always given money to most of the system, so it

won’t lose much money. In fact, it will save some money because there won’t be so many workers to check tickets.

(D) Most of Europe’s cars come from there.

(        )43. Why did Luxembourg stop getting fares on public transportation?

(A) To bring in more workers from other countries.

(B) To make more space on all of its roads.

(C) To help people save money and pay for other things.

(D) To make bus drivers’ jobs easier.

background image

(        )44. According to the reading, what happens when people from other countries drive into Luxembourg?

(A) They must leave their cars outside Luxembourg.

  (四)

People love going out and feeling the sun on their face and the wind in their hair. However, because of COVID-19, they had

fewer chances to leave their homes and do that in 2020.

Governments across the world had people keep social distance themselves in order to slow down the spread of the disease.

They wanted them to have as little close contact with others as possible, so they closed schools, gyms, restaurants, and other public

places. They also had people who didn’t have to fight against COVID-19 work at home. However, that left those who couldn’t work

at home lots of free time and nowhere to go.

Thanks to the Internet, though, staying at home wasn’t totally boring. In fact, people had fun watching famous singers give free

live concerts from their own homes. Also, they could visit popular museums and national parks, such as the Louvre and Yosemite

National Park, through their virtual tours.

Of course, people who had to keep social distance themselves at home could enjoy

more traditional free-time activities. They read books, watched their favorite movies, and

spent time with their family if they were living in the same houses. With all those things and

more, people were able to stay calm, worry less, and survive the difficult time during

COVID-19.

(A) It was against the law to leave.

(B) It was too hot to be outside for very long.

(C) It helped to slow the spread of a disease.

(D) It stopped them from having contact with their family.

(      ) 46. According to the reading who could NOT go to work as usual?

(A) Doctors.

(B) Waiters and waitresses.

(      ) 47. According to the reading, how did people who couldn’t leave home kill their time?

(A) They experienced all that a museum could offer through the Internet.

(B) They read stories out loud to their neighbors.

(C) They went from house to house and visited different families.

(D) They held their own concerts in their own living rooms.

Even though it is still early in the morning, the air quality index (AQI) is red in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and the central part of

Taiwan. The air there is unhealthy mostly because of a cold air mass. It brings something dirty to those places. Of course, some

emissions are from factories. It is usually difficult for people there to see things clearly when they are outside. If people are sensitive

to the dirty air, they’d better stay at home before the cold air mass moves.

How could we make the air in these places cleaner and the air quality index (AQI) be green, too?    First, it may not be

convenient for us to take a bus or the MRT to work, but it is helpful to make the air cleaner. If you enjoy walking or riding

bicycles, it is helpful, too. Second, if there are fewer factories in these places, there will be fewer emissions. However, a lot of

workers will lose their jobs at the same time. Being healthy or making money, which one is more important to us?
