In our kindergarten class, we constantly encouraged children to recognize and accept strengths in themselves
and others. We daily promoted the concept of “family.” We truly cared, nurtured, embraced and loved each other. One
of our strongest class 36 was, “We will say only kind things to each other.” The children became cheerleaders
for one another in attempts as well as successes. When someone had difficulty with a task, another child often said,
“ 37 .” Standing ovations were given throughout the day for acts of efforts.
One day the children were seated on the floor eagerly relating experiences about springtime when Michael
raised his hand. Michael often raised his hand, but he couldn’t speak. Because of the safe, inviting environment we
had established, his enthusiasm to learn never seemed to 38 . I recognized him each time he raised his hand, and
we all gave him time to respond at his own comfort level, hoping this would be the time he’d talk. Then, after a few
minutes, I would respond as if he 39 . “Michael, that was a good try.” We then proceeded with our lesson.
When Michael raised his hand again this day, the class and I eagerly waited, as usual. And 40 , he spoke!
The children and I were so amazed and joyous; the energy in the room was overwhelming. One of my class angels
spoke first, “That was a great wrong answer!” The class immediately stood and gave him a standing ovation.

While online gaming has become a favorite pastime of millions of people, researchers are investigating how
gaming can improve work performance. Studies in the medical field show that surgeons who play video games using
a joystick improve their hand-eye coordination, resulting in 37 percent fewer errors during real-life surgery. Other
interactive software allows doctors to perform simulated surgery on avatars, providing practice time before operating
on actual patients.
In the workplace, companies have developed performance games that run behind-the-scenes on employee’s
computers. The games award points for tasks such as being on time for work, attending meetings, and finishing
segments of projects. This reward-based type of gaming triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, raising
performance levels and production. Other companies have discovered that linking video games with audio
instructions raises retention levels of employees. Skills are then acquired more quickly.
IBM has placed Innov8, a business game, at over 1,000 universities. Students participate in real-time business
models that provide immediate feedback on the decisions they make. This interactive education tool enhances book
learning and lectures by allowing students to apply learned material. Decision-making skills are improved, as
students learn by trial and error, and strengthen analytical skills.

Some communities have decided to base evaluations of teachers on students’ test scores. It will be these
evaluations that determine how much teachers will be paid. I don’t think this is a very good idea for several reasons.
First of all, if teachers’ salaries are going to be based on how much students learn, then some teachers will start
to teach their students only what they need to get high test scores. This means that students will miss out on a lot of
education that can’t be measured on a test. For instance, one of the best methods to help students understand a subject
is encouraging them to discuss it. A common practice is to divide the class into groups, have each group discuss the
subject, and then have them report back to the whole class. This kind of shared learning can lead to a full
understanding. It also teaches students how to discuss and debate ideas. However, it doesn’t supply facts to show off
on a test.
Another problem with basing teachers’ salaries on how much their students learn is that teachers may ignore
students who have learning difficulties. Some students are slower learners than others and need more individual
attention. If a teacher is worried about tests, he may feel he has to push the majority of the students to cram facts.
That effort will take all his time. He won’t be able to help the less able students.
It’s true that there are teachers who experience “burnout” after many years teaching and just don’t care how
much their students learn. Basing their salaries on their students’ test scores may improve their efforts. However, it’s
not fair for the majority of teachers. They deserve and need to be judged by other criteria.

How teachers can best promote their students’ academic performance.

Students’ test scores should be tied to their teachers’ salaries.
Students’ test scores should not a part of their teachers’ evaluations.
How much teachers are paid should not be decided solely based upon students’ test scores.
