Did you know the meaning of a word
may change over time? Many English
words we know now had different meanings
a long time ago. One example is the word
nice.
Around the year 1300, nice was first
used in English to mean stupid. Two
hundred years later, nice began to carry a
better meaning. If people said a book was
written nicely, they meant the book was
written clearly or carefully, not
stupidly. After 1800, nice began to take
its modern meanings like kind or
friendly. Since then, people have thought
of nice as a word with good meanings.
A good change of a words meaning
like this example of nice is called
AMELIORATION. Though we dont use
nice to mean stupid any more, it is fun to
know how much a words meaning can
change from its start!

Dear John,
Choosing to go to a vocational school is like batting during a baseball game. When you stand at home base and
swing your bat, you don’t know if you’re going to hit a home run or not. However, you do know that you must focus
on the ball. Making choices is the same way. No one can tell you whether it’s right to go to a vocational school. You
need to think deeply and listen to your heart before making your choice. If you do that, you’ll have a better chance
of hitting a home run.
Maybe you’re simply too worried to think clearly, but you should listen to the voice inside your heart. It will
never do you wrong. If you love art, then go to a vocational school. You can take hands-on classes and learn new
skills. All of those will help you sail successfully into your future. Here’s a poem for you. Good luck.
Shh… Shh…
Can you hear it?
Listen. Listen.
It’s talking to you.
It’s telling you what is true.
It never lies to you.
Why is this?
Because it is your best friend.
It is you.
Yours truly,
Emily

For many people, a fond memory of childhood is building a treehouse. For the Kesharwani family in Jabalpur,
India, it’s not just a memory; it’s a part of everyday life.
The most amazing sight in Jabalpur is the home of Yogesh Kesharwani. The concrete house was built around a
150-year-old fig tree. The tree grows up through the house and the branches of the tree come through the
windows, walls, and roof. Yogesh said his father considered cutting down the tree before building, but in the
end, the tree was preserved. “We are nature lovers,” says Mr. Kesharwani. Moreover, in Indian culture, fig trees
are treated as sacred. He added, ”We knew it was easy to cut down the tree, but difficult to grow one like it.”
The special house is often photographed by tourists, and it is even studied by architecture students

Disney has made lots of films since 1928, and its first movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was
released in 1937. After this, Disney made so many successful movies that most people in the world at least have
seen one Disney movie. Several of children’s favorite movies are about romantic stories between princes and
princesses. However, are the stories close to real life? A new study says that Disney movies send the wrong
message to children of different classes.
A study from Duke University says that Disney hides poor people’s problems in their movies. Take the seven
dwarfs and Aladdin as examples. The dwarfs work as miners ,but unlike the real miners in the real world, they only
look happy in their lives. The story of Aladdin makes children think that it’s easy to become a rich person in one
night. The study also points out that rich characters from the upper classes are unhappy, but the poor always
seem much happier.
Besides pointing out these problems with social classes in the movies, the study also has something to say about
the love stories between princes and princesses. It says that Snow White marries a rich prince after meeting him
just once, but she never sees the seven dwarfs, who she sees more often, as romantic partners. They are the ones
who keep waiting for her to wake up.
Some may argue that we should not take Disney movies too seriously because they are only make-up stories
after all. However, we should also make sure that children won’t take anything for granted because of the stories
in Disney movies.
