Dear Cousin Ted,
It 29 a long time since I last 30 you at Grandma’s house. 31 Mother told me that you are
getting married. I am so happy for you! Last weekend, I visited Meinong and bought a pair of oil paper umbrellas
32 your wedding gift. I thought that the shape of an open umbrella is round, and “round” means “perfect”. Just
when I was proud of my idea, Nora told me that the word for “umbrella” sounds like “separate”. I was so surprised
because I had never 33 that. So, I have to ask you 34 me one dollar. This way, you “buy” the umbrellas
from me, and I can still wish you good luck because the words for “oil paper” sound like “having kids” 35
Hakka. I’m so 36 going to your wedding.
Hope 37 you soon!
Best Wishes,
Amy

Year's First Case of Hantavirus Fever Confirmed
The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed this year's first case of hantavirus fever.
The Center says that it’s a person from another country, working on a fishing boat in Northern Taiwan, and
they found him positive for the hantavirus after carefully checking.
The CDC says the man may have been infected by mice on the fishing boat. Also, they caught a mouse on the
boat and found the virus on it.
Other fishing boats close to that boat have been disinfected.
There have been twelve reported cases of hantavirus fever in Taiwan since 2009.
The CDC also says people should keep houses and working places clean. “Don’t let mice come, stay or eat.”

Customers Rush to Buy Imported Mangosteens
People lined up to buy mangosteens, which haven't been imported into Taiwan for many years.
The long line at a Carrefour in Taipei came after the government lifted the ban on this fruit from Thailand
earlier this year.
The ban started in 2003 because of fruit fly problems. The ban ended in April because the mangosteens
passed the quarantine examination.
The first box of mangosteens was sold at Carrefour's Nei-hu store on Sunday morning. Before the store
opened, over 100 people lined up outside.
A Carrefour spokesperson says that so many people want the fruit so much was a little “unexpected" because
it was soon sold out in 30 minutes, but there may only be one more sale by the end of this year.

Nike
Nike sneakers are one of the world’s most well-known sports shoes. You can go almost anywhere in the world
and find Nike’s famous “swoosh” sign right away. Nike is named after the Greek goddess of victory. Its famous
swoosh sign was from an art student for thirty-five dollars.
The shoe kingdom had an interesting beginning. In 1951, an American named Phil Knight was part of a
running team at the University of Oregon. His coach was a man named Bill Bowerman. Bowerman was always
looking for better sports shoes for his runners. This made Knight think that sports shoes might be a business.
In 1963, Knight decided to travel around the world. He went to Japan and visited a company that made running
shoes. Knight told the company to let him sell their sneakers in the United States. He opened a small store in Oregon
called Blue Ribbon Sports to sell running shoes. Business was good, so Knight decided to make his own shoes.
These first shoes were made in the home of Bowerman, Knight’s friend and former coach. It was Bowerman who
designed and created Nike’s famous running shoes. The shoes helped the runners on Bowerman’s track team and
also became popular with runners around the country.
In 1972, Knight changed the name of the shoe business from Blue Ribbon Sports to Nike and started using the
swoosh sign on all of Nike’s shoes and clothing. Nike has been growing ever since. Nike is now the world’s largest
sneaker company with factories all over the world. Nike has also signed deals with famous athletes like Michael
Jordan , LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant to advertise the company’s sneakers.
Today, Nike shoes are not only for athletes. Many teenagers and adults also buy the sneakers for their everyday
use. In the past 30 years, Nike has grown from making shoes designed for running to also making everyday sneakers
that people can wear when they go out with friends. Nike sneakers are not only a big part of the sporting world but
also an important part of popular culture.

The old lady took the key and followed the man into the bank.
The man took a gun out of his pocket and said to the clerk, “Give me all the money!”
But the old lady did not see this. She went up to the man, put the key in his hand, and said, “Young man, you’re
stupid! Never leave your key in your car; someone is going to steal it!”
The man looked at the old lady for a few seconds. Then he looked at the clerk---and then he took his keys, ran out
of the bank, got into his car and drove away quickly, without any words or money.

I planned to do my work today
But a yellow bird sang in the apple tree
And a butterfly flew across the garden
All the leaves were calling me
When the wind went singing over the land
Shaking the grasses back and forth
And a rainbow held out its shining hand
So what would I do but laugh and go?
