The Louvre is the most famous art museum in the
world. Every year, about 6 million people visit it.
However, the Louvre was not always an art museum.
At first, the Louvre was a fort. It had no art in it.
In the Middle of Age, Paris was the biggest city in
Europe. Other countries attacked it. In about 1200,
King Auguste built the Louvre to protect the city. Next, the Louvre was a beautiful palace. In 1527,
King Francois I wanted to live in the Louvre. So the fort was destroyed, and a new palace was built.
Each king after him built more. In the palace, there was the art of the royal family. But only the rich
people could see it.
Finally, the Louvre became an art museum. There was a revolution, and the royal family left
France. The museum was opened in 1793. The royal familys art was shown to the public. Over the
years, the museum grew. France got more art from around the world. Many galleries were added.
The Louvre now has over 35,000 works of art in it.

6.~10. Amazing Little Builder
Spider webs are amazing. They are very complex. So, spiders must
build them in several steps. The spider starts with the most difficult part.
That is the first thread. With special body parts, the spider makes silk thread.
Some isn’t sticky, but the first thread is. The wind carries it. And with some
luck, it will stick to something solid. Then, the spider makes it strong enough
with more threads. Now, it can hold the whole web.
Next, the spider builds two more strong threads. The first three threads
form a Y-shape. Many more of these threads are added until spider can cross
between them.
The spider must now build circles around the middle. These are not
sticky. So, the spider can easily walk around the web on them.
Now, it builds the sticky circles. These are for catching insects. The
spider starts on the outside. It goes around the web and moves slowly towards
the center. As it goes, the spider replaces the non-sticky threads with sticky
ones.
Finally, the web is finished. The spider sits in the center and waits for insects. In time, it will
become less sticky. Then, it must weave a new one all over again.

11.~15. A History of Pizza
Almost everybody loves pizza. It is very simple yet delicious type of food, and is now enjoyed by
people all over the world. But where is pizza from originally?
Most people think pizza is from Italy, but this is not true. It is even older
than ancient Rome. In fact, the ancient Greeks made the first kind of pizza.
They baked flat, round bread with other foods on top. Sometimes, it only had
olive oil and spices on top. At other times, herbs and fruit were used as toppings.
Can you imagine an orange or apple pizza?
Today’s pizza is very different from those first pizzas. The modern pizza
was invented by an Italian baker named Raffaele Esposito. He was from Naples, Italy. He put cheese
and tomato sauce on top of flat bread, which he baked in a brick oven. Later, he added different types of
toppings, such as garlic, meat and tomatoes, on flat round bread. Modern pizza was born.
Even though pizza was first made in ancient Greece, it was the Italians who made the pizzas we like
to eat today. Nowadays, you don’t have to be Greek or Italian to love pizza. You can enjoy pizza
almost everywhere in the world with many different kinds of toppings. It is really an international food.
Thank goodness for that baker from Naples, Raffaele Esposito.
