When most people hear the word “Hollywood”, they think of the American movie industry—famous
movies, handsome actors and beautiful actresses. However, Hollywood is also a suburb of Los Angeles,
where ordinary people live. The two Hollywoods are very different.
We use “Hollywood” to refer to the movie industry of the United States. The phrase “Hollywood
producers” refers to people who produce movies in the United States movie industry. We use the phrase
“Hollywood hit” to describe a blockbuster movie that probably cost millions of dollars to make. When we
say she is a famous “Hollywood star”, we mean an actress, probably American, who may earn millions of
dollars for each movie she is in. However, Hollywood movies do not need to be made in Hollywood, and
most famous actors and actresses do not live in Hollywood. Some of the Hollywood stars of today are not
even Americans.
Hollywood is also a district in Los Angeles, California. It used to be the area in which many of the great
movies producers had their offices and where most of the movie studios were located. This has changed
now. The area has lost a lot of its glamour. Much of the movie industry has moved into surrounding areas
such as Burbank and the Los Angeles Westside. However, the district of Hollywood is still known for the
Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Entertainment Museum, and the TCL Chinese Theater.
Hollywood is still one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Los Angeles area. The magic of
great movies is still there even if the studios aren’t.
