Ever since she was little, Serena has dreamt of being in and winning the People of Iron
Race. Her father told her about his competing in races like that when he was in college. He
always tried hard, but he was never lucky enough to win. He said it was difficult because first
1.5 kilometers were run, then 40 kilometers were swum, and finally 10 kilometers were biked.
Serena could tell her father loved the sport because he always got excited when he talked
about it. Because of that, her mind was made up, and she would compete in the sport to make
her father proud.
Last Saturday was Serena’s first People of Iron Race, and her father was there to cheer
her on. The race got started, and everything was going well for her. Then something
happened. She was bumped into during a crowded part of the run and fell. She landed on her
knee and hurt it badly. She was told not to move. However, she didn’t want to quit when she
was almost at the end, so she got up and fought through the pain. Although she didn’t win, no
one was prouder of her finishing than her father.

Do you know how people celebrate the New Year in different countries? In Korea, women
and girls in the past weren’t allowed to travel outside the walls around their homes. In order
to see what was happening on the other side, they used special boards in their yards. They
looked like seesaws, and one person would stand on each end. Each one took turns jumping and
sending the other person into the air, so they could see over the walls. Today, it is done for
fun during the Korean New Year.
In Denmark, it’s a tradition for people to throw their old broken cups, bowls, and plates on
the doorsteps of their friends, family members, and neighbors. The bigger the pile, the more
the people are liked and the more good luck they will have in the next year.
In Brazil, white clothes are worn to scare away dark, evil spirits; the same is done with
bear costumes in Romania. Both are said to bring the wearers good luck, good health, and good
fortune. board 木板 seesaw 翹翹板 doorstep 門階 pile
For many people in Asia, the Chinese New Year is more important than the New Year’s Eve.
To keep bad luck away, people in Taiwan and China tidy up their houses before the start of the
Chinese New Year. It sure is interesting how people around the world celebrate the New Year,
isn’t it?
