Doctors in our country often have to work 34 hours or 13 without sleep.
Most of them work 104 hours a week, and some even 150. (There are only 168 hours
a week.) One report said that a doctor with long work hours cannot think more

題組三 (20 ~ 23)
Some parents may be happy to see their children stay up studying. They
think it shows their kids are hard-working. However, doctors say differently.
They say staying up late is not good for young people in many ways. If
teenagers have enough sleep, they may become happier and get higher grades at
school. They may also feel less tired and have fewer chances to get sick.
In 2019, California made history by signing a new law to ask schools to
start later. Under the law, high school classes would start no earlier than 8:30
a.m., and middle school 8 a.m.
This new change made most students happy but others worried. To
parents, it was a problem in the morning. When schools started at 7:30 a.m.,
parents could see their kids get on the school bus before going to work.
However, this new law made it difficult for parents to see their kids off and go to
work on time. Another problem was after-school clubs. Some students joined
sports or music clubs. They usually practiced for many hours after school.
With later school start times, their training ended up late, and the students went
home late. It became difficult for them to take part in the clubs and have enough
time to study before bed. People in California have to follow the law from 2022,
so schools, children, and parents tried their best to find a way to fix the problems
in the past three years.

Hi, Jerry!
How are you doing? I want to tell you about something cool I saw
on the street the other day. I was walking home from school when I saw
a group of people gathered around these strange-looking posters. Each
poster had a picture of a clothes hanger on it, and at the bottom there was
a slit for people to hang old clothes. These were second-hand clothes for
homeless people. It was a pop-up street market, and we can put clothes
we didn’t wear anymore. Homeless people could then go there and
“shop” for free clothes.
What a great idea, right? It’s called the Street Store. I checked it
out online. It started in South Africa, and the people behind the Street
Store are trying to spread the idea around the world. You can sign up
on their website (https://www.thestreetstore.org/) and get all the poster
designs or information packs for free! Maybe you could start one in
Taiwan!
Hope you’re well!
Love, Sally
Hi, Sally!
Great to hear from you. That sounds like a great idea. In fact, my
cousin does something similar in Taiwan already. He’s part of a student
group called “Share5” that holds events for homeless people. Thanks for
telling me the information. Maybe I could start my own market. I’ll let
you know how it goes!
