For many people around the world, ravens are just a kind of small birds in dark. Most of them thought
that ravens are ugly and always bring bad luck. However, the British think differently. Three hundred
years ago, there was a popular story about ravens. “If the ravens leave the Tower of London, the kingdom
will fall.” Because of this old saying, King Charles II asked his people to always keep ravens in the Tower.
Today, the Bristish are still following the king’s words.
There are seven ravens at the Tower now. They have a full-time keeper, the Ravenmaster. Becoming
the Ravenmaster is not easy at all. It often takes quite a few years of training. After that, he works hard
every day to keep the ravens healthy. Keeping them away from danger is part of his job. Thanks to the
Ravenmaster, these birds are safe and sound. Visitors are able to see them on the ground, the stairs or
high walls without getting hurt from people.
The Ravenmaster plays an important part in the UK. He is the protector of this British tradition.
Although the job is very difficult and takes much work, it is a great honor to be a Ravenmaster.

【題組 IV
Vampires and Garlic
Vampires are the subject of many scary books and movies, and they're usually scared of one thinggarlic.
However, why did all the writers make garlic a vampire's nightmare? There are actually some reasons
behind it.
To start with, garlic doesn't smell good. In fact, many people hate the strong smell of garlic. Vampires
have a better sense of smell, so garlic should give them a headache. What's more, garlic has allicin in it.
It can actually kill mosquitos, the real-life vampires. If they can die from it, vampires could, too.
Finally, garlic treats infections. In most vampire stories, vampire bites can cause an infection and turn
people into a vampire. Luckily, garlic is a very strong antibiotic from nature, and it can fight off and kill
most infections. So, if becoming a vampire starts from getting an infection, then garlic would be a good way
to end vampires.
Although vampires are not real, garlic is great for sure. Garlic is useful for keeping bugs away and even
treating infections. It truly is a wonderful gift from nature.
vampire 血鬼 allicin 大蒜素 mosquito 蚊子 infection 感染 antibiotic 抗生素
53.
What is the reading mainly talking about?
(A) To explain vampire’s fear of garlic.
(B) To tell people to watch out for vampires.
(C) To show people the right way to use garlic.
(D) To give information on treating infections.
54.
What does “nightmare” mean?
(A) The worst fear.
(B) The excellent smell.
(C) The better excuse.
(D) The helpful medicine.
55.
There are four students talking about this reading after Teacher Vicky taught in class today. About their
ideas, which is NOT true?
(A) Jacky: Garlic is a strong antibiotic and I’d like trying to use it to fight off and kill most infections.
(B) Jessie: If we meet vampires, we can throw the garlic to them. The strong smell of garlic shoud
give them a headache.
(C) Tim: My mother always wants me to have more garlic. Now I know that garlic can treat
infections and it’s good for my body.
(D) Arthur: Using garlic to kill mosquitos is not useful because they’re not afraid of allicin.
