Most of the animals it takes into its possession have been orphaned

or injured.  Adonis, the bald eagle, is missing a wing after sustaining

a gunshot wound.  KitKat the porcupine only has three legs after being

caught in a trap, while Twix the other porcupine was found as an orphan

with her umbilical cord still attached.  Chena the Lynx was rescued

after being kept inside a tiny chicken coop for years, and consequently

developed multiple handicaps.  We use the animals to dispel myths and

raise awareness about what they are really like.  The more education

people have, the more they want to help these animals.

While the word "tuna" may bring to mind thoughts of dinner, these

massive fish are impressive in their own right.  Bluefin tuna can reach

15 feet long and weigh up to 2,000 pounds.  In the midst of one the

worst years of climate change in our planet is history, scientists

announced some good news this month:  According to the latest "Red List

of Threatened Species" by the International Union for Conservation of

Nature, four commercially fished tuna species are making a comeback.

Given that it lies beneath a forest floor, that's good news for the

fungus, but bad news for the trees.  The humongous fungus has wiped

out many of the trees in its path, but luckily, the Pacific Northwest

has lots more where that came from.  That's probably why this humongous

fungus has an equally humongous lifespan.  It's survived in about the

same spot for nearly 10,000 years, just chowing down on trees, making

more of itself, and living its best fungus life.

These efforts are intended to complement internal actions Meta has

undertaken to combat climate change.  The company hit net zero carbon

emissions in 2020 and as of earlier this year, it's using 100 percent

renewable energy.  Other environmentally conscious efforts include

reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 97 percent in the last four years

and supporting measures to remove carbon from the atmosphere.  Like

Microsoft, Meta aims to restore more water than it uses by 2030.

Users can create applications as if they were drafting a flowchart

rather than writing line-by-line codes for each desired function and

capability.  These platforms also generally have features that allow
for experimenting, prototyping, testing and deployment.  This type of

app development work is sometimes called point-and-click development or

simply click development.  Low-code/no-code platforms stem from earlier

rapid application development tools such as Excel, Lotus Notes and

Microsoft Access that likewise put some development-like capabilities

into the hands of business users (i.e., non-IT professionals).

Lovingly called the "Lord God Bird", this hauntingly beautiful fowl

has been sought out by birders for years to no avail.  People who were

lucky enough to spot it were said to have blurted out the Lord's name.

Even the biologist who wrote the bird's obituary cried.  These famed

birds once flew from the coastal plains of North Carolina to the marshy

waters of Texas, but their numbers started to dwindle in the 1800's

after being gunned down for private collections and hat makers.

According to the study, the evidence that points to all of this is

based on an analysis of ancient DNA pulled from over 700 soil samples

on the cave floor across its three chambers.  A quarter of the samples

contained hominin DNA from microscopic bits of human hair, skin, and

feces that were mixed in with the soil.  Other DNA from ancient dogs,

bears, hyenas, and horses were also found.

Decades of pollution caused by farming and real estate development

in the region have pushed the ecosystem to the brink, causing the

manatees to starve.  Last year, one scientist who works for the Florida

Fish and Wildlife Conservation noticed a worrying trend.  He sampled

tissue from manatee carcasses and found they were severely emaciated,

with some up to 40% below their body weight.

It sounds super-scary:  something from outside the universe, a force

so unimaginable, is pulling every single galaxy towards it.  What

monstrosity of cosmic physics could it be?  It's the dark flow.  At

least the good news is that we don't know if it exists, and even if it

did it wouldn't be that big of a deal.  Everything in our universe is

constantly moving.  Planets orbit stars.  Stars dance within galaxies.

Signs a cat may want you to stop petting it can include it thrashing

its tail, turning its head away, rotating or flattening its ears,

shaking its head, licking its nose, trying to move away, or rippling

the fur on it back.  Other behaviors may include if the cat goes still,

stops purring, stops rubbing itself back against you, suddenly start to

groom itself or rapidly turns its head to face you.

Recently, a fossil of an ancient bird skull was discovered, shedding

light on how birds' large brains may have helped them survive the

dinosaur-killing asteroid.  A few million years before an asteroid

wiped out all the dinosaurs on earth, known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene

extinction, an early bird called Ichthyornis flew through the skies.

Europe's initial vaccine rollout accelerated quickly in the early

months of 2021, but nations are now reckoning with the gradually waning

immunity of those doses.  Two real-world studies published last month

confirmed that the immune protection offered by two doses of Pfizer's

Covid-19 vaccine begins to drop off after two months or so, although

protection against severe disease, hospitalization and death remains

strong.  Studies have shown similar outcomes for the AstraZeneca and
Moderna shots, which are also in use in Europe.

Other clones from Willa's samples will join Elizabeth Ann at her

current home at the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center

in Colorado.  This exciting experiment will continue as scientists

work towards understanding the implications that these close will

have on the larger ecosystem, and if they will ever be able to be

integrated into the wild population.  These developments are beyond

exciting for the protections of many lost and endangered species.

All eyes are on the Frozen Zoo and the future of cloning to protect

and revitalize threatened species around the world.
