Television can be very helpful when people are careful
with the shows they watch. Some high-quality programs help
us understand many subjects: science, medicine, the arts, and
so on. Besides, television helps very old people to make sense
of the world without having to leave the house, as well as sick
people in hospitals. It also gives students a helping hand with
language practice; their vocabulary grows and they get to
practice listening.
Of course, there are several disadvantages to television.
Many children watch TV for more hours each day than they do
anything else, like studying and sleeping. Some even skip
meals for TV. Studies show that after only thirty seconds of TV,
a person’s brain becomes slower like it does before the person
falls asleep. Something else also happens to the brain.
Scientists learn that after children watch a lot of TV, they can
often sit down and study a subject for only fifteen to twenty
minutes, the same as the time between commercials.
Even so, television is just too convenient and useful to
keep away from our everyday lives simply because of the
disadvantages. Stay with “Quality Television” only. Try
creating family rules on the use of television for all family
members both parents and children. It is possible to turn
disadvantages into advantages. Since we became parents four
years ago, my wife and I have always had a “show” for the
family to watch together. Usually at the end of dinner, one of
us will say, “Is it show time?” Then we will watch our pick for
around thirty to fifty minutes. After it is over, we will always
talk about it, often for days. I have learned so much about my
wife by sharing things in shows. We also make sure we have
something to talk about with our daughters.
The famous saying says it all: “Too much of anything is
good for nothing.” And a little of something goes a long way.
38. What does it mean in the reading?
(A) Television. (B) The brain.
(C) Sleep. (D) The Subject.
39. Which word has the same meaning as “disadvantage?”
(A) It is a great plan – the downside is that it is going to
cost a lot of money.
(B) Andy and Jack are in a race for promotion and we do
not know who can win yet.
(C) He thinks highly of equality, so he always has the
same number of women and men in his company.
(D) You are the most optimistic person I have ever seen.
Nothing worries you, does it?
40. What is this reading for?
(A) Telling people to spend less time watching television
and more time on reading or sleeping.
(B) Telling people not to give up the important things
along with the things we do not want.
(C) Telling people to have televisions for old people and
language learners to stay in touch with the world.
(D) Telling people not to forget to spend time with family
even though we may sometimes get busy.
