四、閱讀測驗 (每題2分,共 10 分)
[A] Falling in love with someone is easy, but many teenagers
don't know to love others well. There are a lot of problems about
love, and crimes of passion are easy to be found in the newspapers
every day.
To help students learn more about love and get along with
friends more easily, students in junior high schools and elementary
schools in California are asked to take Emotional Learning classes
twice a week.
In the classes, students are taught to care about themselves and
tell different emotions. If they can learn the way to make
themselves happy, it will be easier for them to control their
emotions. Many kinds of interesting ways are used, too.
For example, teachers let elementary school students know the
feelings by telling stories if someone wants to laugh at them. Junior
high school students, with more understanding about love, are asked
to take care of their friends if their friends are hurt emtionally. After
taking the classes, many of the students learned to care about others.

[B] Most people have experienced tip-of-the-tongue(TOT)
states. We know a word or a name, but we sometimes just can't
successfully recall and say it out loud. When TOT happens, we
may need a second or several hours to find the word. Although
most people have this word-finding problem, it is believed to be
seen in older people more often. However, TOT doesn't really
stand for a bad memory.
In a study done by Brown and McNeill, they read the
participants the definition of an uncommon English word and
asked them to recall and say it out loud. When the participants
failed to find the word, Brown and McNeil would ask questions
about the word. Most of the participants could answer all the
questions although they failed to recall the word. In the study,
when we remember an English word, much other information
about it is stored at the same time. So, it is possible for older
people to experience more TOT states simply because there is
much more imformation in their memory. To many people's
surprise, TOT states can also be useful. When we are trying to
find a word, it is helpful for our memories. Besides, doing more
exercise helps us make TOT states happen less often.
