A Vending Machine for the Homeless
If you want to buy something from a new vending machine in the shopping center in Nottingham in the
U.K., you can’t use money. Everything inside is free and only for the homeless. The homeless can use a key card
to get fruit, sandwiches, energy bars, clean socks, toothbrushes, and other things 24/7(twenty-four hours a day
and seven days a week).
Huxaifah Khaled, the founder of Action Hunger, made the plan for this vending machine. He thought that it
was not easy for those shelters offer enough amount of food and clothing for people in need because they didn’t
have enough money. Khaled tried to find the partners for Action Hunger. He wrote to many companies to get free
veding machines and also a lot of free food. Khaled hoped to address two social and environmental questions,
homelessness and food waste, for his project.
“Homelessness has become so accepted in our society that we often don’t even look at these peopel.”
Khaled said. He hopes this vending machine can be a step to a long-term solution to homelessness. He also
opened an Action Hunger machine in New York in early 2018.

Emily hated animals a lot. She never wanted to keep any pets at home. To her, all animals were dirty. Emily
never knew why people liked to have cats or dogs in the house. It was so stupid!
Last month, Emily’s son, Rick, came home from school with a mouse in a box. Emily was not happy, but
Rick said it was his homework. His teacher asked each student to take care of an animal and learn to get along
with it. Emily needed to say yes.
