Report Writing Format for Special Research Programs subsidized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST)
I. Overview
Based on the principle of academic openness, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) encourages the leaders of general special research programs to publish their research achievements, as long as the aforesaid leaders are fully accountable for the content of research achievements. If the research program content or research achievements involve intellectual property (e.g., patents), violate the medical and health regulations in force, or offend public order and good customs, or political and social stability, MOST shall be notified in advance not to include the submitted research achievements into the compilation of academic achievement reports or make the same available for public for inquiry, thus preventing any unnecessary trouble. Academic divisions will directly use the research achievement reports provided by program leaders when they compile the research achievement reports. Therefore, program leaders shall check the content of research achievement reports carefully to ensure the correctness of their content before they submit the research achievement reports.
The types of research achievement reports and deadlines for submitting them (including the mid-term progress and final reports) shall comply with the rules for the implementation of MOST-subsidized special research programs and funding checklist for MOST-subsidized special research programs. The mid-term progress report shall be 4 to 10 pages long, and faithfully present the research achievements until relevant deadlines. The final report shall contain at least 10 pages.
II. Report Format: Each report shall comprise the cover page, table of contents, abstract and keywords (in Chinese and English), full text, references, self-appraisal table, datasheet of R&D achievements available for promotion, and appendices.
(I) Cover page: A cover page can be made online on the website (http://web1.most.gov.tw; as formatted in Appendix I).
(II) Abstract and keywords (in both Chinese and English).
(III) Full text, including the introduction, purpose, literature review, research methodology, and results and discussion (including conclusions and suggestions)
(IV) Self-appraisal of research achievements: Present a comprehensive appraisal, including details of 1) the degree of conformity of actual research content with the original research program and fulfillment of the expected objectives; 2) academic or applied value of research achievements (briefly describe the significance, value, impact, or potential for further development in relation to the research achievements); 3) the suitability for publication in academic journals or patenting; and 4) main findings (briefly describe whether the research achievements are found to be severely harmful to public benefits), or any other relevant value.
(V) Page numbers: Number the abstract and table of contents using Roman numerals (i.e., I, II, and III) and the full text and appendices using Arabic numerals (i.e., 1, 2, and 3) at the bottom center of each page.
(VI) Tables and figures may be added in the full text or after the references (describe the content of each table and figure).
(VII) Datasheet of R&D achievements available for promotion:
1. By filling out the datasheet of R&D achievements (Appendix III) on the MOST’s Scientific & Technological Resources, Information, and Knowledge Exchange system (STRIKE, http://ap0569.most.gov.tw/strike/homepageIndex.do), the R&D achievements derived from research programs shall be submitted by the R&D achievement promotion department (e.g., the Technology Transfer Center) by following the appropriate administrative procedure.
2. One datasheet shall be filled out for each R&D achievement.
(VIII) If there has been a published article on the current MOST-subsidized research program (please specify its number in the acknowledgement), include the article in the research achievement report or as an appendix, and specify the name and volume of the related journal and date of publication. Please specify the monographs, patents, technical reports, and graduation dissertations (if any) in relation to the implementation of the current research program in the reference section.
(IX) If the current research program involves international cooperation, please highlight the cooperation information (e.g., mutual visits, and profile, achievements and continuity of cooperative research) in the research achievement report.
III. If researchers are subsidized for overseas stay, go abroad for international cooperative and on-site research, or attend international academic conferences, they shall write a report on their personal views on each overseas trip according to the related regulations (researchers attending international academic conferences shall separately attach the full text or abstract of each published article, unless they are invited to give special lectures or serve as conference chairpersons), and submit the electronic version of each published article on the MOST's website (for the format of the personal views report on overseas travel, see Appendices IV and V).
IV. Please write a separate report on each visit of subsidized overseas scholars to Taiwan and submit the electronic version of the report on the MOST’s website (for the report format, see Appendix VI).
V. Notes on the formatting of research achievement report
(I) Page layout: A4 paper (29.7x21cm).
(II) Format: No separate space between rows for Chinese typewriting, and single space for English typewriting.
(III) Font: The text may be written in English using Times New Roman and in Chinese using the 12-point font of the regular script.
