Some Life Lessons I Learned from Being a T raveler
People are essentially the same.
Travel taugh t me a lot about our shared hu manity. Interacting with
people, watching them commute, pick up laundry, go grocer y shopping,
and do all the other everyday things I did back home, allowed me to
understand that, fundamentally, we all just want the same things: to be
happy, to be saf e and secure, to have friends and fa mily who love us.
We may speak dif f er e nt la nguages and do thin g s diffe r en t ly , but
the why of what we do is universal.
Plans are great but don’t be married to them.
I love planning a trip. Even after all thes e years on the road, I still plan

my trips. Pla nnin g gi ves y ou ow ne rs hi p of your tr av el s. It allows you to
imagine yourself in far-off lands do in g co ol th ing s. But don
t be married
to your plans as things will go wrong and you need to be flexible. Also,
being married to your plans doesnt allow for the serendipi ty that travel
gives you. It d oesnt all ow you to wander into that cute café, linger in
the park, or explore t hat random museum you happened to find. Just
plan two or three things to see or do during the day and let the rest fill
itself in. W hen you go with the flow and let the day lead the way, you
get the magic of trave l.
You are more c apable than you think.
All that worrying and f ear I had be fore my first t rip was for naught. This
trave l ing th i ng is a lot eas ier than pe op le m a ke it out to be. Yo u’re not
the fir st per so n to do it, a nd the re is a wel l-w orn tr a il tha t m ake s it easy
for first-timers to fi nd their way. Every day, peo ple get up, go out the
door to travel the world, and survive and thrive. Kids as young as 18
years old make their way around the wor ld without any proble ms. If a n
18-year-old can d o it, so ca n you.

A good diet and ample exercise dont just help your waistline. Healthy
lifestyle fac tors may also help lower your risk of dementia, even if you
have a higher genetic risk, according to a study published on Sunday in
the medical journal JAMA.
This study, along with other re search looking at t he impact of lifestyle
factors on dementia, is being pr esented at the Alzheim er’s Association
International Conference th is week.
There is no cure for or preventive medici ne that ca n stop dementia and
its most common form, Alzheimers disea se. But a growing body of
evidence suggests the way you live can potentia lly lower your ri sk.
The study fou nd that among people with a high genetic risk, those who
maintained a healthy lifestyle -- m eaning the y watched their diet,
exerc i se d reg ula r ly , kept the ir dr in king to a minimum and didn't smoke
-- were less likely to develop dementia later in lif e.
The study looked at 196,383 adults age 60 and older who lived in the
UK and found that specifically , 1.13% of those with a healthy lifes tyle
developed dementia later in life compared wit h 1.78% of those wit h a
less healthy lifestyle -- a statis tically significant difference. T he adults
who took part in the study joined it from 2006 to 2010 and researcher s
followed up with them until 2016 to 2017.

From stopping to notice the trees and the clouds t o putting bird boxes
near your windows, spending more time with nature can boost your
health and we llbeing.
Adapt your routine
Spend i ng tw o hours a week in nature has been found to give health and
wellbeing a significant boost, according to research
by the University of
Exeter Medic al School. Dr Mathew White, who led the study, sugge sted
that a sense of tranqu ility could be key. Startin g your day with a coff ee
in the gar de n, or even near an open window, is a simple way to inspire
calm. Going outside during your lunch break or spending a few minutes
looki ng a t the ni ght s ky before bed are ot h er ide as.
Pay attention to what is around you
Leanne Manc hester of the Wild life Trusts encoura ges people to take a
closer look at plants, trees and even weeds. “Stop to watch bees buzzing
around flowers. There s life ever ywhere, but it is so easy to miss it;
instead, slow down, s top and notice it.” Claire Fr ancis of the
charity Sensory Trust says: “Getting outdoors and co nnecting with
nature needn’t involve a five-mile hike.” Jo Phillips, a dir ec t or of the
Forest School Association, suggests looking for “five beautiful things”
to engage your senses. It could be a flowe r, the clouds, lichen on trees,
or the natural light.”

work are simple ways to increase exposure to nature, says Manchester.
If you’re wa lking with someone, Phillips suggests pointing out elements
that have caught your e ye, espec ially if you are with children. “Loo king
after the pla net needs to become a priority, so we should do everything
we can to ensure the parents of the future have memorable ex periences
in nature, so they can pa ss on that knowledge to the ir childr en.”
