 Red Meat, Processed Meat and Cancer 
 Do you know that eating more than 700 grams of red meat a week inc reases your risk 
of colon cance r? Scientific evidence has shown that colon cancer is more common among 
people who eat the most red meat and processed meat. Red meat includes beef, pork, la mb, 
and goat. Processed meat is meat preserved by smoking, salting, or adding chemical 
preserva tives. Examples of processed meat include bacon, ham, sausages, an d hot dog s. 
The World Hea lth Orga nization  has classified proc essed meat as a G roup 1 carcinogen 
(known to cause cancer ), which means that there is strong evide nce that processe d meat 
causes ca ncer. Smoking and alcohol are also consider ed Grou p 1. Red meat, on the other 
hand,  has been classified as a Group 2A carcinoge n, which means it probably causes 
cancer. T here are certain chemicals in red meat and processed meat – both added and 
naturally occurring – that cause these food to be carcinogen. 
 
To reduce your risk of  cancer, it is recommended e ating no more than one serve of 
lean red meat per day or two serves 3-4 times per wee k. Cut out processed meats 
altogether or keep them  to an absolu te minimum. A diet of mostly f ruits, veg etables and a 
moderate amount of fis h appears  to offer the most  protection against de veloping colon 
cancer. A healthy diet is g ood for overall outcomes and it is also good for preventing 
cancer.
