One of the greatest American novels is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. At the time of its first publishing, the story
was to be read by adults because that was who was in the Salinger’s mind when he wrote it. However, in the modern day, most
teenagers that live in the USA are the ones that have to read it when they are in school. A lot of teachers didn’t like the book when
it first came out in 1951. There were many reviews that said it was not good for teenagers because some parts in it were mean and
evil. That lead it to getting a bad name, and one teacher that taught the book even got fired.
Holden Caulfield, the main character in the novel, had a lot of problems. He not only used bad words, but also didn’t care
about school. What’s more, he did many things that were bad and stupid and even ran away from home. People back then were
scared of students following his example. They didn’t understand that the book was just a story about growing up and how
teenagers often felt alone, angry, and afraid. Today, The Catcher in the Rye is praised by both teachers and students.
