四、閱讀測驗 (每題 2分,共 18 分)
(一)
When I was little, I often went to a beautiful beach with my neighbors. We saw many people walking on the beach and swimming
in the sea happily. We often caught little crabs and shrimp luckily on the beach. We sometimes picked up a lot of beautiful shells
from the beach. We had fun there.
Everything is not the same now. There is always much dirty trash on the beach and in the ocean. Plastic bottles, straws, paper
cups, and masks are here and there. Stinky oil and wastewater are everywhere in the water. Many fish pass away day by day.
Now, we must face the terrible problem seriously and try to solve it right away. After all, we have only one earth. Let’s do our
best to protect it well.

The 921 Earthquake (Taiwan, KVN News)
Mr. Huang lives in Taiwan, an island with many earthquakes. On September 21st, 1999, there was a big earthquake. More
than 3,000 people died and almost 100,000 buildings fell down or burned.
Mr. Huang remembers the earthquake. “I felt everything shaking. I ran into my children’s bedroom. They were still
sleeping. I woke them up.” The Huang family ran out of the building before it fell down. “I saw people crying. It was
terrible,” said Mr. Huang.
“At that time, my wife was in the mountains. She heard a loud noise and people screaming. She saw rocks falling. One of
the rocks hit her leg.” A kind man helped her get to the hospital in time. Mr. Huang said he was very scared, but today his wife
is fine! Mr. Huang and his children are fine, too. “After the earthquake, many people gave money and food to us,” said Mr.
Huang. “With the help of our neighbors and other volunteers, we built a new home.” Finally, Mr. Huang told us, “It was a terrible
experience. Thanks to them, we get through the hard time.”
