Happy Holidays! Today is December 23, and
Christmas is right around the corner! Andy, Bill,
Cathy, and Dorothy is having a Christmas party
now. Everyone in the party is going to tell others
an interesting Christmas fact (事實).
Andy: I go first! Do you know the song, Jingle
Bells? Lots of kids love this popular Christmas
song. But, you know what? The American writer,
James Lord Pierpont, wrote this song for
celebrating races around Thanksgiving time, not
for Christmas!
Bill: How interesting! I never heard about that
before. I would like to talk about Christmas
spiders. In some countries, it’s lucky to find a
spider on your Christmas tree. People in Germany,
Poland and Ukraine often put spider webs on their
trees.
Cathy: Spider Webs on the trees? It’s hard to
believe because a lot of people in my country think
spider webs mean bad luck. People in my country,
Japan, enjoy having fried chicken from KFC on
Christmas Eve, December 24. At first, Japanese
people couldn’t find turkey to celebrate Christmas.
So, they started eating fried chicken at KFC. In
1974, KFC started putting fried chicken in paper
boxes. It was easy to eat at Christmas parties.
Their idea was a big success. Now people wait in
long lines to eat at KFC on that day.
Dorothy: I love fried chicken. I will have that on
Christmas Eve this year. It’s my turn now. Do you
know why people put stars on their Christmas
tree? Look to the story of Jesus’ birth. In it, three
wise men saw a bright star in the sky. They
followed it to find baby Jesus. The star on the
Christmas tree means this bright star.
35. What did Andy, Bill, Cathy, and Dorothy do in
