Amid fears about robots replacing human jobs, South Korea could become the first
country in the world to introduce a “robot tax.” A new proposal could see the country
reduce the amount of tax benefits for companies that invest in automated machinery. So
while it’s not exactly a direct tax on robots, it looks like the government is making
investment in robotics less appealing for companies. South Korea has the highest
concentration of robots in the world, with 531 multipurpose industrial robots for every
10,000 employees in the manufacturing industry. Currently, South Korean companies
that invest in automation equipment can have up to 7 percent of their corporate tax rate
deducted. The new ruling, however, will see this cut by up to 2 percent.
British universities are slipping down the world rankings, with experts blaming the
decline on pressure to admit more disadvantaged students. Cambridge University, which
for many years was ranked the best in the world and for a decade held a place in the top
three, has now dropped down to fifth place, according to the QS World University
Rankings. Overall, 51 of the UK’s 76 institutions have slipped down in the rankings
since last year. The Russell Group members, which represents 24 of the UK’s most
selective universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, saw 16 dropping down in the
rankings.

The Ministry of Science and Technology unveiled plans on July 6 to establish up to
four artificial intelligence innovation research centers across Taiwan as part of government
efforts to enhance the nation’s competitiveness in AI technology. The initiative will receive
NT$1 billion (US$32.68 million) in funding annually over a period of five years. The
goals are to attract over 300 foreign and domestic academic and industry experts as well as
train up to 3,000 personnel in AI-related disciplines.
