Since the COVID-19 outbreak this year, many people have
driven anywhere and lined up for hours just to get a mask.
However, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, washing your
hands often is more important than wearing a face mask, said Miu
Wei-chieh, a doctor at Mennonite Christian Hospital in Hualien.
Miu said that both “wet wash” and “dry wash” ways can help
prevent people from catching a virus. A wet wash is washing one's
hands under running water with soap for more than a minute so
one's hands are very clean. Using only warm water is useless. A
dry wash is using an alcohol-based hand cleaner to clean one's
hands. Only people who visit a hospital or who are serious sick
should wear masks.
Dr. Chen Wei-po said that masks can be reused by the same
wearer if the masks do not get wet and are not worn for more than
four to six hours in dangerous places like hospitals. Doctors say
that masks can be sterilized by exposing both sides of the mask to
ultraviolet (UV) light for 30 minutes. However, the masks must
then be stored in a clean dry place for three days before being
reused. Another way to extend the life of masks is to use the
washable mask covers. The mask cover needs to be cleaned and
replaced every day before use.
36. Which is true about a wet wash?
(A) You wipe your hands with a towel.
(B) You wash with soap and water for a minute.
(C) You wash with only warm water.
(D) You use an alcohol-based cleaner.
37. Which mask can be used again?
(A) A mask which is worn for ten hours by the same person
while in the hospital.
(B) A mask which is exposed to UV light for 30 minutes and
worn by another person.
(C) A wet mask which is put into the middle of the mask cover.
(D) A dry mask which isn’t used for over six hours and is worn
by the same person.
38. According to the reading, which is right?
(A) To prevent the spread of COVID-19, everyone should
wear a mask.
(B) After exposing a mask to VU light for 30 minutes, it can be
reused right away.
(C) The better way to prevent people from getting a virus is to
wash hands.
(D) Using an alcohol-based cleaner and UV light can extend
the life of masks.
