() The History of Christmas Trees
The evergreen tree has been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years. Pagans, non- Christians
used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter, as it made them think of the spring to come. The
Romans used Fir Trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia, an ancient Roman celebration that
happened on 19 December. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God.
Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used as Christmas trees. It probably began about 1000 years
ago in Northern Europe. Many early Christmas Trees seem to have been hung upside down from the ceiling.
Other early Christmas Trees, across many parts of northern Europe, were cherry or hawthorn plants (or a
branch of the plant) that were put into pots and brought inside so they would hopefully blossom at Christmas time.
If you couldn't afford a real plant, people made pyramids of woods and they were decorated to look like a tree
with paper, apples and candles. Sometimes they were carried around from house to house, rather than being
displayed in a home. ( From: https://www.whychristmas.com/customs/trees.shtml)
Lots of people think that dogs just see in black and white. But this is not true. Scientist recently discovered that
dogs do see colors, just not quite the same color that we do.
When people see a rainbow, they see purple, blue, blue-green, green, yellow, orange, and red. But when dogs see a
rainbow, they see gray, blue, gray, yellow-brown, yellow, and yellow-brown. Can you imagine?
Dogs see red and green as a single color (yellow-brown) and also blue-green and purple as a single color (gray). This
means that if you buy your dog a bright red toys, it will see it as an ugly yellowish brown.
Why? Well, a human eyes has three different types of cells that can detect color. Dogs’ eyes, however, have just
two. This makes the range of colors that they can pick up much more limited.
(By Jeff James from I Wonder Why, Joy Hanline English)
Mom: From Monday to Friday, you can follow your study plan and work hard, but on weekends,
you can do some activities that you like or start a new hobby.
Lisa: Are you sure this will be OK, Mom?
Mom: Lisa, you’re the apple of my eye. That will never change even if you don’t get good
grades. I want you to do well at school, but I also want you to be happy.

() Time is so important to us. Early people did not have clocks or watches. They used sticks to make a shadow,
which moved with the sun, to know the time of a day. Later they used other devices, like sundials to tell the time of
day when there is sunlight by the position of the Sun in the sky, and hourglass, a device used to measure the passing
of an hour. It has two round glass sections linked by a narrow channel, and contains sand which takes an hour to flow
from the top section into the lower one. Around 600 years ago, people began making large mechanical clocks
with bells. They are large and heavy. After that came the modern alarm clocks. Nowadays, people even wake up with
cheerful music instead of a noisy alarm. shadow 陰影 device 裝置 position 位置 measure 測量 link 連接
