Do you remember the serious drought two years ago? There were no typhoons in 2020, so there was little
rain in 2021. Taiwan 35. its worst drought in 67 years then. The water level in lakes and reservoirs
on the island were low. Take Sun Moon Lake for example. Its water level dropped from 748.8 m to 737.69 m.
Some lakes almost bottomed out. For example, the Zengwen Reservoir was only at 11.5% and the Techi
Reservoir is at 5.5$ capacity. The drought went on for a while and there wouldn’t be enough water for people,
animals, or plants.
To end a drought, there should be enough rain. But, short rain wouldn’t help much. Only a lot of rain over
a long time could stop the drought. 36. , people used water wisely and saved water in many ways.
For example, some parts of Taichung, Miaoli, Hsinchu, and Changhua 37. to take turns to get

water for two days a week. Wasn’t it convenient? People now don’t want to experience that again, so they
keep saving water in their daily lives. Here are some ways to save water. First, turn off the tap when brushing
teeth. Second, take short showers instead of taking the bath. 38. , water plants or your garden

MOLLY’S SUMMER VACATION
I went to New Zealand this summer vacation to study English. The most special thing for me in
New Zealand is its weather.
I remember the day I left Taiwan. It was 37°C. I wore a T-shirt to take the airplane. After arriving in
New Zealand, I started shaking so hard. I almost forgot it was winter in the southern hemisphere!
There are two long islands in New Zealand, so the weather can be very different around the country
and might change quickly every day. My friends in New Zealand liked to joke that you can experience
four seasons in one day!
During my stay, I lived in Wellington, the capital city of NewZealand. The average temperature
was below 10°C. I always brought an umbrella with me because July was the main rainy season there.
You never know when you might get showers! The average temperature in NewZealand goes down
when you travel south. I visited Queenstown in the South Island in August. It was even colder than
Wellington. There was heavy snow and the wind was bone-chilling. I missed the warm weather in
Taiwan so much when I found my phone frozen in the snow.
I was happy to experience the winter in New Zealand during my summer vacation. Next time, I
want to go again to see what the weather is like in its summer.

Patty: Joshua, I heard that you came back from Canada this summer vacation. I know both Americans and Canadians
speak English. However, there are some differences between American English and Canadian English in daily
usages. Could you share them with me a little bit?
Joshua: Sure! There are some interesting differences between the two. Let's start with the spelling. People in Canada
spell "colour" with a "u" and "centre." They don’t spell "color" and "center." Canadians often follow British
English rules when it comes to spelling.
Patty: Ah, I see. It's not common in Taiwan but it’s interesting. And what about words for everyday things? Do you
have any special Canadian terms?
Joshua: Yes, for example, Canadians say "washroom" when Americans say "restroom" or "bathroom, and they say
“biscuitswhen we say “cookies. When we ordered a popular sandwich with fries and gravy, Canadians call it
"poutine."
Patty: Poutine! I know that. Americans just call it "fries with gravy," but "poutine" sounds fun.
Joshua: It's a delicious treat, for sure. Last, Canadians are known for their politeness, so you might hear they say
"sorry" very often, even when it's not necessary. I once saw a closed store and there was a sign outside by
the door. It said, “I’m sorry. We don’t open.
Patty: Oh, it’s a lot of fun. I've heard about that Canadian politeness. Americans say "sorry" too, but not so often.
Joshua: Well, Patty, I hope this chat helps you get more ideas about the differences between American and Canadian
English.
