We can use water to make clean energy without any smelly smoke or dirty pollution. The
energy can give us electricity. That's why, high in the mountains of Switzerland, they've just
built the power plant, a water battery!
It's made of two huge lakes, one high above, and one down below. To make electricity, water
moves super-fast from the high lake down to the low lake, through big long tunnels! Inside the
tunnels are huge turbines. They look like the blades of a fan, but much, much bigger!
The power of the water makes the turbines spin really fast. As the turbines spin, they make
electricity! This water battery is so big. It took 14 years to build, and it can make enough
electricity for 900,000 homes! That's more than they need in Switzerland, so they want to share
it with the other countries in Europe. (The reading is partly rewritten from News Lunchbox 2023-01-09)

People from different countries see death in different ways. In Taiwan, we seldom talk
about it, even on Tomb Sweeping Day, often on April 4th or 5th of the calendar. People in
Taiwan go to graveyards to clean their family members tombs and prepare lots of food for the
dead to show their respect and love. In Mexico, people there celebrate the Day of the Dead
with joy. During the festival, people there also sweep tombs, but they remember their dead
relatives in a lively way.
Two years ago, I visited my friend, Rosa, in Mexico. I was there for the Day of the Dead on
November first and second. We invited the spirits of her departed ancestors back to our world.
We painted our faces and dressed up in costumes, special clothes for the festival. Later, we
danced at a street party. It was so fun. Back to Rosas house, there were flowers, candles,
candy, and food on the table. Her family cooked a big meal for everyone, and then shared
touching stories of their dead relatives with me. For Mexicans, the Day of the Dead is all about
love, not a scary festival. (The reading is partly rewritten from Nani Reading Comprehension.)

What’s True About Sleep?
In a new study, researchers asked some adults some questions about teenagers sleep.
The researchers wanted to find out if the adults believed some sleep myths. One myth is
that sleeping late on weekends is good. Another myth is that later school starting time
encourages teenagers to stay up late. They surveyed the adults and found that two-thirds of
them believed these myths.
After getting too little sleep Monday through Friday, many teenagers sleep late on
weekends, sometimes until noon. Catching up on sleep on weekends isn’t good for
teenagers. They still feel tired on weekdays. In fact, short naps during the week are better.
Also, when school starts later, teenagers do not necessarily stay up later. Research shows
that when school starts later, teenagers can get more sleep, have a better mood, and do
better in the classroom. The ideal starting time should be 8:30 a.m. or later according to one
researcher.
