the industry. The most obvious way they exercise this
influence is to identify bugs and other flaws to the makers of the new
prod uc t, who th en qu ick ly fix them. Furthermore, many social me dia
has forums for early adopters to discuss new pr oducts and make a name
for themselves as shape rs of public opinion. “Companies a re now
starting to realiz e that…early adopters are more than just geeks with a
passion b ut also a great way to spread their brand and products,” writes
Selix. Conse quently, “the first purchasers of a pr oduct are often
rewarde d with discounts, free lifetime service, or other incentives for
good revie ws. They also sometimes have a say in up-and-coming
products. For example, in 2012 Goog le began the Glass Explor er
program. ‘Explore rs’ chosen accor ding to their influence were given the
chance to buy Glass, the wea rable computer, before it became avai lable
in st ores, and to help shape the product’s development. Later, Google
invited the public to apply for the Explorer program, saying applicants
would be judged in pa rt on how creative, original, and influential their
