(C) It’s fine for Japanese people to give their Chinese friends clocks on their birthday.
(D) It’s a good idea to give a British friend a knife when you go to their welcome party.
A few years ago, a British minister gave a pocket watch to the mayor of Taipei as a gift during her
visit to Taiwan. The shape of the pocket watch looks like a clock. A clock is never a good gift in Taiwan
because giving a clock in Chinese sounds like saying goodbye to the dead at a funeral. That is a big taboo.
When it is time to give people a gift, you should find out more about their cultural norms. People in
the UK seldom give knives because they cut through a friendship. Japanese don’t do that, either, because it
means that people kill themselves. If you don’t have time to do that, then books are good gifts because they
are safe and won’t hurt anyone’s feelings.
Here is another example. Flowers can say a lot, but they have different meanings in different
countries. Chrysanthemums are bad for the Spanish because they mean death, just like white lines for the
British. Red roses are common gifts, but they are not right for a business meeting. Also, yellow roses mean
cheating in France and death in Mexico. What’s more, always give an odd number of flowers, but not 13
because some people think it’s unlucky.
