In England, there are some “fulling mills” around the
country. What is a “fulling mill”, and what is “fulling”?
The process of fulling seems to have been known to the
Persians at least as far back as the 10th century, and the
first fulling mill in England which was recorded was in
1117, the 12th.
Fulling is a process to make a woolen cloth scoured,
clean and thick. In some places, the process was called as
“tucking” and in Scotland it was known as “waulking”.
That’s where the surnames of Fuller, Tucker and Walker
come from.
The process starts by cleaning the wool of dirt and oil. In
old times, people used urine to clean the oil on the wool.
You will be happy to learn that people use soaps instead
of urine today.
Today, new and more convenient clothing have been
invented, and the need for fulling drop sharply. Many
mills have been already changed into corn mills.

Is there an eighth continent under New Zealand? You
think you know your seven continents? Think again, as
there’s a new one hoping to join the club. Say hello to
Zealandia, a huge land almost entirely under the water of
the southwest Pacific
It’s not a stranger at all, you might have heard of its
highest mountains, the only parts showing above water:
New Zealand. However, there is no scientific body that
formally recognizes continents. So it could only change
over time if future research accepts Zealandia as the same
with the rest so that we might be learning about eight, not
seven, continents. Who knows! After all, just a few years
ago, Pluto got kicked off the list of planets.

Have you ever heard about “Burning Man”? It’s an
event held every year since 1986 in the western United
States at Black Rock City. It was first held on Baker
Beach in San Francisco by Larry Harvey and Jerry James
who built the first “Man”. It takes its name from its ritual
burning of a large wooden man that happens on the
Saturday evening of the event. The late summer event is
an experiment in community and art. It will last 9 days
and ends on the first Monday in September, which also
the Labor Day in the USA. Every year, the theme of the
event which is chosen by the organization, the Burning
Man Project, may be different. The themes are in the
areas of art, education, culture, etc. Before 1990, it was
free to join the event. However, people have to pay for
the tickets after 1990 and the fee seems higher and higher
every year.
