Coronavirus: A Threatening Crown
Just because the outbreak of coronavirus has given you a
longer winter vacation having more fun doesn’t mean it’s a
good thing. You couldn’t be more serious about learning this
word before going back to school.

care yourself.

From Buzzing to Ringing
A cellphone is something everyone has now, and
people can’t live without it. We use cellphones to do a lot
of things, such as taking photos, keeping in touch with
friends via calls and texts, sharing life on social media,
doing online shopping and so on. Do you know what
cellphones look like decades ago?
buzz 嗡嗡聲 via 透過 decades 幾十年
In the 1990s, it was cool to have a pager, aka BB Call
in Taiwan. It didn’t ring but buzz. It looked like a bigger
4 4
sized match box with a screen on it. When the beep
sounded in your bag or on your belt, the pager showed a
message. Pagers can only receive messages, while
sending messages was done through a traditional phone
and calling the pager numbers. What’s more, you needed
to translate your messages to numbers because pagers at
that time could only show numbers.

When animation Emoji and stickers we use on Line
or Messenger make our messages fun, you may be
surprised at how you can really say what you want to say
with numbers. Surprisingly, it brought another kind of joy
in creating a series of numbers to mean special messages.
For example, 520 means I Love You. Couples often had
their own secret codes, so pagers played an important role
in keeping love going on, just like what cellphones do
now.

Some people still remember the fun of using pagers.
Sadly, cellphones have replaced pagers since early 2000s.
Because of the birth of pagers, we can now enjoy such
convenient life that cellphones bring us.
